Dal fry is a delicious and popular Indian lentil recipe that is made with tur dal (pigeon pea lentils), onions, tomatoes and spices.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup tur dal (pigeon pea lentils)
  • 1/2 cup chaana dal
  • 1/2 cup moong dal
  • 5 cups of water
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 3-4 small dry red chillies
  • 1/2 tsp cumin (jeera) seeds
  • 1/4 tsp hing (asafoetida)
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 larger onion (or 1 medium onion)
  • 1 tomato
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1-2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 2 tsp dhana-jeeru (cumin-coriander) powder
  • 2 tsp salt
  • garam masala to taste
  • chana masala to taste
  • 1 tbsp chopped cilantro

How to make

  1. Wash the lentils 4-5 times
  2. Add 5 cups of water and cook in InstantPot for 7 mins
  3. Next heat the oil, red chilli peppers, and cumin seeds
  4. Once you hear the crackle, add hing (asafoetida)
  5. Sautee garlic, onion, and tomato
  6. Add they sautee and spice mixture to the dal and mix it
