Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup tuvar dal or pigeon pea lentils
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 tsp green-chilli paste
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp red-chilli or cayenne powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander-cumin powder
  • 1 1/2 - 2 tbsp jaggery
  • 1-2 tsp salt
  • 1-2 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 2-3 small dried red chillis
  • 3-4 cloves
  • 1-in cinnamon
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 1/4 tsp hing (asafoetida)
  • 1/4 tsp fenugreek (methi) seeds
  • 1/4 tsp fennel seeds

How to make

  1. Add 3/4 cup washed tuvar dal (pigeon pea lentil) and 2.5 cups of water in InstantPot and put it on high pressure-cook for 12 mins
  2. Mash the lentils with the spices and simmer on low heat for 7-8 mins
    • 1 tsp green chilli paste
    • 1 tsp ginger paste
    • 1/2 tsp turmeric
    • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder or cayenne powder
    • 1/2 tsp cumin-coriander
    • 1 1/2 - 2 tbsp jaggery
    • 2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  3. Next is tempering, heat 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter) with 2-3 small dried red chillis, and 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  4. Once you hear the crackle, add the remaining spices
    • 3-4 cloves
    • 1-in cinnamon
    • 8-10 curry leaves
    • 1/4 tsp hing
    • 1/4 tsp fenugreek (methi) seeds
    • 1/4 tsp fennel seeds
  5. Add it to the dal mixture and serve
